Dota 2: October Trends
Enough time has passed to understand which heroes of patch 6.85 have become the most picked on professional Dota 2 scene, their popularity in ordinary matches having been increased simulataneously. Let's see which heroes are the most picked in public games.
We've collected the data about the increase/decrease of heroes popularity. Furthermore, we've checked whose winrate has changed and for which hero the buffs of the patch were really helpful in terms of winrate. We collected the data from dotabuff.com.
The popularity of this red hair girl is stable: the patch 6.85 hasn't changed it, leaving Windranger on the leading positions on both professional scene and in average matches. The stats even increased by 4,07 % — from 27,61% to 31,68 %!
As we've stated before, the popularity of the hero is determined b its universality, the ability to stand on any lane and play any role of the existing in Dota 2 (you can even go to the jungle with the hero, provided you've got particular skill and are followed by the creeps). Furthermore, almost any artifact fits the hero perfectly, their quantity depending on the action necessary in the battle.
It's interesting to watch the winrate in the pub matches. The line is a zigzag, actually. Few heroes have such winrate stats. Windranger requires not only good "hand reactions", but also smart thinking. If a player lacks skill or understanding, this hero will act worse than Anti-Mage without items.
Example of professional play by OG's Miracle-
This is the first victim of patch 6.85. He was first favourable updated, with some of his abilities becoming useful. This enabled him to get to top positions in picks. However, 6.85b update cut the improvements, which affected the winrate. The popularity of the hero has increased by 6,47 % in October!
The higher you fly, the harder you fall. Doom proves it. His IceFrog decided to buff the hero so lavishly in patch 6.85 and return to professional Dota 2, that the hero became much wanted hero almost in any draft. Due to Scorched Earth the health was regenerated very fast. And the main ultimate ability practically excluded any hero from the battle. 6.85b update changed a bit Scorched Earth, and the improvement from Aghanim`s Scepter doesn't provide bonus damage anymore. It might seem minor things, but the winrate has dropped by 4,52 %! The most dramatic decrease of the month!
October didn't introduce any substantial changes to Doom the increase of victories was 1,5 %. However, in early November it dropped under 50 %, it might infulence the popularity of the hero. All the more The Frankfurt Major is near!
The leader of popularity change was the "greediest" hero — Alchemist. 6.85 patch didn't change the hero substantially, adding damage to Acid Spray and increasing bonus Greevil's Greed from rune. However, it was enough to return the hero to both public and average games.
His popularity growth is absolutely fantastic. It can be compared with the resurrection — 8,05 %! The hero wouldn't've reached such popularity but for the professional games. Any farming player dreams of repeating Radiance on the 8th minute. Crazy victory of Alliance at The Frankfurt Major qualifiers, was achieved with Alchemist in pick up. It's notable that 6.85b, which changed the balance in the game, didn't make any changes in the hero. This means, that we'll be seeing the "meanie" will last at least till the next patch.
All these changes increased Alchemist's winrate. However, now it is only 50 %. This means that the presence of the hero in the pick isn't a key to success. This hero depends too much on farm, and requires good teamplay (mostly, with supports stacking in jungles). Otherwise Alchemist will be unnecessary "piece" with Radiance and a potential of four additional Aghanim`s Scepter for all the teammates.
Great example of the play on hero (patch 6.84)
Drop of popularity
The changes introduced by 6.85 patch were minor, but the drop of popularity was substantial. The damage of two abilities was decreased: Light Strike Array and Laguna Blade. In general, the hero brings 110 points of damage less on the maximal level (taking into account the magic resistance of the rivals). Now it'll be much harder for Lina to become the killing machine.
Another reason for the decreased of her popularity (minus 2,92 %) was the loss of radius of Eul's Scepter of Divinity, one of the key artifacts of the hero, which became a catastroph for Lina, since she depended severely on the possibility to hit the rival from distance. On the other hand the winrate of Lina remained the same, since the hero is capable of bringing much mess in a battle.
Recently he was one of the most popular heroes. Now he's going down. It seems IceFrog decided to bring Bloodseeker back to where the hero had been before it was reworked. Otherwise it's hard to understand why he was cut so hard.
The popularity of the hero decreased by 4,43 %. 6.85 patch practically switched off the hero: the opportunity to eliminate the rivals in early game is gone, so there' no reason to pick Bloodseeker anymore for both pro teams (unless they have some special preparation) and ordinary gamers in pub matches. The winrate of the hero, however, retains the same compared to the previous month.
Another dead hero, who got to top 1 unpopular heroes again. 4,82 % is not the "crazy minus 10", but still the decrease is substantial. It's interesting that 6.85b patch didn't help to stop the process. Well, it seems at The Frankfurt Major we won't see Storm Spirit by Suma1L?
8 % approximately is the rate of popularity of the hero. On the one hand, it's great to see that there's no more endless jumps and "ho-ho, ha-ha" shouts in every pub game. On the other hand, the old heroes are replaced with new ones, like Doom. Win a game by pushing one button or show great level of skill by picking a non-standard hero... It seems IceFrog has strange priorities.
Above are the Winrate stats on the first week of November. Soon The Frankfurt Major begins. We can't predict the most popular heroes of the upcoming event, but we can guess. What do you think?
