COVERAGE: The Frankfurt Major


The main Dota 2 event of this Fall — The Frankfurt Major begins today. The world's best teams will clash in an epic confrontation lasting for 9 days. On 21 November the winner of Valve's Major-tournament will finally be decided in Grand Final.


The most interesting question concerning the Major is whether the reigning champion of The International United States Evil Geniuses manages to defend their title of the world's strongest team or be defeated by its rivals.


The Frankfurt Major will be held in 2 stages. The group stage will be held on 13-14 November. The main stage will last from 16 till 21 November. The attendance of all the matchdays is free, except for the final day, which is subject to payment, provided you get to Frankfurt.

  • 16 teams are divided into 4 groups
  • The system is Double-elimination
  • Match format is best of 3
  • Two best teams of each group will get to the upper brackets of play-off
  • Teams, which took 3rd-4th places will get to the lower brackets of play-off


Main stage:

  • The system is Double-elimination
  • 8 teams will begin in lower brackets and 8 teams will begin in upper brackets 
  • The first matches of the lower brackets will be held in best of 1 format, other matches will be held in best of 3, the format of Grand Final is best of 5
