Gamescom 2015 review
Gamescom is the second most important vide games event next to Е3. The most influential companies of the market participate in the conference. Here the greatest announcements are made and the largest contracts are signed. This year Gamescom was no exception. The event was held in the German city of Cologne, beginning on 5 August. The list of participants included Blizzard Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Microsoft and many other organization.
Microsoft announcements enjoyed most attention. The leader of IT industry came to the exhibition with a large number of introduction. The beginning was stunning: Microsoft representatives announced the release of console version of Windows 10 with voice personal assistant Cortana, which will enable to control almost all the console functions by voice. Additionally that said that new Xbox One will be able to run Xbox 360 games. They also introduced a new Xbox One Chatpad — a strange hybrid of gamepad and keyboard.
Following the hardware, the new projects were presented. Most of them were exclusive solutions for Xbox One. The main focus was made on 4 projects: Scalebound, Forza Motorsport 6, Halo 5: Guardians and Quantum Break. Less popular, yet worthy projects, for example Crackdown 3 remained in shadow. All the games represented various genres. Forza Motorsport 6 is the next episode of a legendary racing series. Scalebound is a strange mix of slasher and Final Fantasy. The combination of shooter and time experiments, Quantum Break was the most remarkable. Microsoft prepared very well. The presentation inspired a desire to buy a new console and to leave the real world for a couple of years. The company seems to tend to unite the PC and console segments into one "ecosystem". The tendency is very good, since its success will be beneficial to everyone - developers, gamers and publishers.
The audience was also very interested with the presentation of Electronic Arts, which brought almost all its project except for Mass Effect: Andromeda to Gamescom. Star Wars Battlefront with its new mode Fighter Squadron was the star of the presentation. The mode is fully devoted to the air battles. Next to an epic cosmic drama, a sweet game Unravel about a cat is presented. A peaceful game process compounds a series of easy puzzles, so the game suits both adults and children.
Next game is Need for Speed. This time the developers decided to provide an illusion of choice for a player. There are 5 heroes and various of ways to play the game. The racing looks amazing, the roar of engines thrills. However, the tuning process seems tiresome and uncomfortable.
Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst has the game mechanics of the first part with a few introductions. The most important novelty is the "openness" of the world. Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Sims 4 had a couple of additions, yet no surprises. Star Wars players will get new game fractions, quests and the increase of the maximal level. The fans of The Sims will get a new city and many entertainments.
Representatives of Blizzard Entertainment were laconic. It took an hour for them to show a new mode of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, which enables to distribute the control of the base and army between two players. Well, it's hardly new, since the similar mode was introduced to StarCraft: Brood War, but it wasn't popular at all. Next was the video about new addition to World of Warcraft — Legion. The video shows, that we'll have a same old WoW, but a big bigger. Afterwards the additions for Heroes of the Storm were shown: 4 new heroes and new battlefield.
Presentation of Wargaming was unexpected. Apart from World of Tanks they presented a remake of a legendary cosmic strategy Master of Orion. The game of the pas millennium gained a new life. Square Enix didn't bring anything new. They showed videos about Just Cause 3, Hitman and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and slightly hinted that this year the company focuses on Final Fantasy XV.
Ubisoft presentation provided more questions, than answers. The following games were presented: Assassin's Creed Syndicate, For Honor, Might & Magic Heroes VII and Tom Clancy's The Division. Each of the project was much discussed. Sega entertained the viewers with the series of Total War: Warhammer and Arena. Presentation of Bethesda Softworks wasn't astonishing at all: we've seen Fallout 4 already, so as the new Doom, which is a remake of the first game. Unexpectedly, demonstration of 2K Games and Activision attracted much attention. Video about Mafia III, XCOM 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Destiny: The Taken King were shown.
In general, the exhibition was successful. Many companies managed to surprise the viewers. Most presentation attracted enormous number of viewers. The new technologies looked amazing, The audience enjoyed both graphics and the game worlds of most of the products. All we have to do is to wait for the releases and compare the presentations with the real games.
