A look at Na'Vi's opponents in the Major Qualifiers

The groups for the Shanghai Major are out and Ukraine Natus Vincere are in Group A alongside some familiar faces and mostly CIS squads. Let’s take a look at our opponents and see who could be the biggest threat when it comes to claiming top spot.
The format of the Regional Qualifiers for the Shanghai Major is a bit different from the one used for Frankfurt. We will again have 10 teams divided into 2 groups with Top 2 from each advancing to the playoffs. However, the results of Bo2 matches in the groups are valued differently. For a 2-0 victory a team will be awarded 2 points, for a 1-1 draw 1 point and finally, 0 points will be given for 0-2 defeat. The playoffs will be played in a Double Elimination Best of Three format with the Winners and the Runners up qualifying for the Shanghai Major.
The groups have already been released and Ukraine Natus Vincere is in Group A alongside Russian Federation Team Empire, Russian Federation HellRaisers, Russian Federation Team Spirit and International Mamas Boys. By the looks of things, our squad got a bit lucky and was placed in the easier group because they managed to avoid both Russian Federation Vega Squadron (Frankfurt Major participants) as well as International Team Liquid (probably the favourite of the whole qualifiers). Let’s take a closer look at Ukraine Na’Vi’s opponents.
Team Empire

The current roster of Team Empire contains two of Ukraine Natus Vincere Hall of Famers - Ukraine Alexander "XBOCT" Dashkevich and Ukraine Gleb "Funn1k" Lipatnikov. The team itself has been struggling ever since The International 5 with both roster stability as well as bringing in results. However, at the beginning of December 2015 with their current roster they seemed to pick up their form once again as they came out victorious out of Game Show Global eSports Cup Season 1, taking home $125,000. From that point on it hasn’t been as good as the team probably would have liked as they were eliminated 2-1 from D2CL Christmas Charity Magic and WCA 2015 by teams that seems to run hot at those particular events.
Empire hasn’t played an official match since 19th of December 2015 so it is hard to tell in what shape they will come to the qualifiers. What can be said tho is that the team is full of experienced player who know Ukraine Na`Vi very well. That combined with rising form can be a dangerous mixture. That means that Team Empire will most likely be Ukraine Na`Vi’s most fearsome opponent in the group stage.
Ever since their superb run in the DAC European qualifiers and the event itself, HellRaisers didn’t manage to impress. They managed to achieve some minor success throughout the year but nothing major. Recently HR placed 2nd in the D2CL Christmas Charity Magic earning $10,000, however a first round exit of the BTS Europe #1 two days after shows that consistency isn’t really there. One could argue that their side of bracket in D2CL turned out to be pretty easy given the teams that participated in the event. Putting all of that together HR doesn’t look like a candidate for a top 2 placing in the group and a spot in the playoffs.

Team Spirit

Most people are probably not familiar with the name Team Spirit as they are new brand in eSport (founded in 2015) but they picked up the roster of CIS Rejects in the early December 2015. The team is an interesting mixture of veteran players like ua Arthur "Goblak" Kostenko or ua Andrey "Alwayswannafly" Bondarenko and some newcomers - ua Bogdan "Iceberg" Vasilenko, ru Roman "RAMZES666" Kushnariov.
The team has been doing great in small online cups placing Top 4 in three of them this month including one win. However, what is more impressive is Team Spirit’s run in the LAN qualifiers as they managed to secure spots in both i-League StarLadder in Minsk as well as MarsTV Dota 2 League Winter 2015. Qualifying for the Major would be, by far, the biggest achievement of this young squad but judging by how they have been doing in the past month  they will be Ukraine Na`Vi’s biggest contenders for the spot in the playoffs alongside Empire.
Mamas Boys
Mamas Boys is another new name in the Dota 2 scene. However, it is just another rebranding as three players are former International 4C&L members. The team has came out victorious out of the first European Open Qualifiers where they showed strong performance, although it was against weaker teams than those listed above and mostly in a Best of 1 format. Because of that it is tough to judge on what level this team is. They won’t be a walk through for the rest of the competition but we have to wait and see if they can actually take out some wins.
