Dota 2 Heroes: Pudge

The glory of this terrifying and funny big guy has spread far beyond Dota. He’s so popular that he can be deemed a main hero of YOLO-Dota and a symbol of pub games. What makes him so special in game aspect? Perhaps, it is because this hero can alone kill almost every hero on the map, though it is possible, only if you have a fair individual skill. In all other cases this hero ruins the game. And that’s the reason why “sweaty” pub-players are obsessed with rating don’t like him. So Pudge is both hated and adored by the community. This article is devoted to you, Pudge!

Let’s trace the history of the Pudge and find out how he became what he is now. Let’s get back to the times, when there was no Dota II or Warcraft III. Then in 1996, a company Condor, which was subsequently renamed into Blizzard North and bought by Blizzard Entertainment, had developed game Diablo. It was released on the last day of 1996 and gained outstanding popularity in the community due to an interesting deliberate plot, many quests, outstanding music, game balance and many other aspects. Furthermore, RPG had a very good multiplaying, which enabled the players to gather in company and play together.
On the second level of the game, there was a demonic Boss – Butcher with goat’s horns, blooded apron and a ruthless cleaver in his hand. The walls of his room are covered with dead bodies, and the floor is covered with blood. That’s one of the reasons why most players remembered the meeting with the Butcher for a very long time! When you opened the door of that room he would run at you with a scream “fresh meat” and begin beating you with his huge blooded cleaver. Scary, isn’t it?
The game states that the Butcher consists of the bodies of other demons. Winning such big guy is hard. It requires good skill, as the boss has high move speed, big health and brings substantial damage. Though the Butcher wasn’t the main character in the game, he became popular due to difficulty, bright appearance and much entertainment. His scream “ah! Fresh meat!” gained much popularity. Blizzard introduced Buther in Diablo III, though he looks more prepared to the meeting with the hero. He’s got a new weapon - large hook, but screams the same line.

The current Pudge doesn’t look like Diablo’s Buthcer, but it is believed that Pudge is heavily based on this character. In 2002, Blizzard entertainment released another iconic game Warcraft III Reign of Chaos, which was popular due to a very deliberate ingame world, vast history and mystic atmosphere. A clumsy fat hero with a cleaver and a hook was introduced in the game. His name was Pudge — The Butcher. He was one of the Undead’s units.
His outer appearance was also substantially changed. He turned from a muscled demon into a fat clumsy guy. His became too small as opposed to the body, covered with many scars. There was a huge hall in his belly demonstrating his viscera. In addition to that he had an underdeveloped third arm and horrible smile. The creators worked hard to make him look disgusting. Furthermore, two main features were introduced in third Warcraft: Pudge ate his enemies and stank, spreading a poisonous cloud all around.
However, Pudge gained his true popularity only in Defence of the Ancients, where he became a full-scale hero. He had substantial health and good magical resist. The new feature was introduced: he threw his hook far away to drag his enemy and eat it.

DotA Allstars   Dota 2   HotS
Nobody knows the history of this character. Some say that Pudge was a human, a Butcher, who went mad and began eating the bodies of his victims. The others say that Pudge was never alive and that he was made of many corpses, sewn together, and revived by necromancers. Nevertheless, we know for sire, that the body of Pudge consists of the pieces of his victims’ bodies, he sews on his own body, becoming even more fat and undefeatable. He speaks about his intellectual development in the following lines. The next MMORPG, World of Warcraft, broke all the records in terms of users’ quantity. A Butcher was introduced there too, though it had a different look.
We’re approaching the time, when DotA Allstars gained independence and became a separate game, named Dota 2. Pudge is represented here in a new improved image. He looks neater: he’s got green curly hair and has no redundant limb. His inner organs don’t fall off the belly anymore. However, his inner core remains the same. There’s more of me(at) to love, as they say. That’s so true about our favorite hero a friendly professional and hard worker. Here’s his official history in Dota 2:
In the Fields of Endless Carnage, far to the south of Quoidge, a corpulent figure works tirelessly through the night--dismembering, disembowelling, piling up the limbs and viscera of the fallen that the battlefield might be clear by dawn. In this cursed realm, nothing can decay or decompose; no corpse may ever return to the earth from which it sprang, no matter how deep you dig the grave. Flocked by carrion birds, who need him to cut their meals into beak-sized chunks, Pudge the Butcher hones his skills with blades that grow sharper the longer he uses them.
Swish, swish, thunk. Flesh falls from the bone; tendons and ligaments part like wet paper. And while he always had a taste for the butchery, over the ages, Pudge has developed a taste for its byproduct as well. Starting with a gobbet of muscle here, a sip of blood there...before long he was thrusting his jaws deep into the toughest of torsos, like a dog gnawing at rags. Even those who are beyond fearing the Reaper, fear the Butcher.

Due to his charisma and specifics, Pudge is on the top of the fame. He’s got the largest pick rate in Dota history. He can be seen on the professional scene, though it seldom happens due to his game role. Everything, connected to Pudge, cause ambivalent emotions in Dota fans. On the one hand, this hero is the most loved one. On the other hand, he’s much hated, because he’s capable of destroying games. Anyway, nobody can be indifferent to Pudge. We all know about that special sparkle between him and Dendi. Our player is often associated with this hero. We still recall All Stars Match at The International 2015, when Dendi came there in Pudge costume.

Diablo III

This year first Blizzard’s MOBA Heroes of the Storm was released. The game contained many heroes from the Blizzard’s universes: Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo and other games. There’s no surprise, that the game has butchers. There are 2 of them: The Butcher from Diablo III and Pudge’s cousin — Stitches. While Diablo’s Buthcer has different characteristics, Stitches is pretty similar to Pudge both in terms of skills and the ingame role. These heroes are developed simultaneously and create their own stories.

Summing up, nowadays, Pudge is one of the most popular heroes in all aspects. He is often featured in comics, pictures, cartoons, cosplays and tales. He’s also the model for figures, toys, etc. Playing this hero is such a pleasure!
And the last but not the least – the pictures:

Interesting facts
