Dota 2 Heroes: Riki

The second episode of our “Dota heroes” series is dedicated to the character that makes his rivals feel extremely uncomfortable. The vast part of supports’ gold is spent to reveal this fight initiator before he attacks them. Unlike the previous hero, this character is knee high to a grasshopper, has great hair, goat horns and a very distinctive smirk. That is him, Rikimaru (Rikimaru Stealth Assassin — Riki’s name in Warcraft III the Frozen Throne).

Let’s take a look back in history. The character of Rikimaru has mythological origin. In former times of Olympian gods, Dionysus — the god of winemaking and wine — used to live on perishable lands. He was always accompanied by his troops that included different animals. Satyrs, semi-human semi-goat creatures, were among them. Horns, human head and torso, and goat legs and tail. They were cunning, lazy and extremely dangerous.

Satyrs were featured in many different literary works, on pictures, in films and, after the beginning of video games development, they started to appear there, too. Today we are talking about satyr Rikimaru, whose story has begun in Warcraft III The Frozen Throne, where he played the role of a neutral unit. In Dota Allstars, he turned into the one of agility heroes. Here is the story of Rikimaru:

Born as the heir to the satyr dominion, Rikimaru was trained by the mightiest warriors of his race. However, the power of the Burning Legion managed to corrupt many of his kind, leaving them as mindless beasts in the forest. Vowing revenge against the Scourge, he sharpened his skills for battle. Using his small size to his advantage, he can render himself invisible, enabling him to stab his enemies in the back. And by using thick smoke as cover he becomes nearly untouchable.

Another identical to Rikimaru hero is Night Hound from Heroes of Newerth, the game based on DotA map. He is similar in terms of appearance, abilities and the role that he plays in-game. The only thing that is different is a pack of basic characteristics. Satyrs themselves are quite popular heroes. They have a very impressive outlook and legend, so little wonder that they are included in numerous video games, such as Disciples, Diablo, World of Warcraft etc. Dota 2 hero looks exactly like his predecessor from Warcraft III, while the story, even despite a few changes, is still very touching:

Riki was born middle child to the great dynasty of Tahlin. With an older brother groomed for the throne, and a younger brother coddled and kept, Riki, the small middle son, seemed born for the art of invisibility. It was an art he cultivated, and one which ultimately saved his life on the night that his people were betrayed and his family slaughtered. Of all the royal line, he alone escaped—small and agile, unassuming, using smoke as cover. He cut his way out of the royal grounds, using the advantage of surprise, quietly slitting the throats of one enemy warrior after another. Now free of his royal responsibilities, Riki uses his talents in service to a new trade: Stealth Assassin. He silences his enemies, sharpening his skills, hoping to one day take revenge on those who killed his family and robbed him of his birthright.

There are other distant relatives of Riki on the map — the neutral creeps-satyrs that serve as an alternative way of getting money and experience. However, these guys are completely different from our main hero, and have their own unique skills and abilities both in Warcraft III and Dota 2 .

Eventually, the character of Riki in Dota has undergone some changes. First, he had an invisibility ultimate and Blink Strike as a second skill, but due to the low efficiency of the first one, their positions were switched. From then on, playing Riki became a lot easier, considering that he could use the invisibility spells right from the first level.  Here is a short statistics of this hero from dotabuff.com:

  • Riki chooses to play off-lane in more than 53 % of the games, being successful in the half of them.
  • The biggest win rate of the past week was shown in the games against Anti-Mage (59,97 %).
  • The best Riki counter-pick of the past week is Bristleback.
  • Na`Vi.XBOCT ranked first for successful Riki plays. He used him 37 times, and has a 81,08 % win rate.
  • Riki has the best win rate in a late-game stage. His most effective items are Abussal Blade — 75,77 % and Butterfly — 75,79%.
  • Riki is the 16th most popular hero in Dota 2 rankings.

Rikimaru has quite a few sets, available at the workshop:

Rightful Heir

Monstrous Reprisal

Riki is a rare pick in the matches of professional teams. He has never been outstandingly popular in professional Dota, and the reason for this is his low efficiency at early stages of the game. He is very dependent on items and can be quite weak on the chosen lane. Considering that Dota 2 is a game where enemies use your disadvantages to take a win, not many people risk using this character in their strategies. But still, he is a favorite hero of pub-community. Due to not very strong team play in public games, Riki can be quite powerful and solo-kill almost all rivals.
