Shanghai Major qualifiers in January
The Shanghai Major qualifiers' dates have been just announced by Valve and are set much sooner than most of us expected, at the very beginning of January! With that there is only a couple of opportunities left for teams to stand out of the pack in order to earn the prestigious direct invite to the event or to the qualifiers.
As we can read in the official announcement: The Open Qualifiers will be held from January 3rd – 6th with the Regional Qualifiers directly following from the 7th – 10th. Team registration for the Open Qualifiers will begin on December 18th.
Although there is no mentioning direct invites it would be logical to assume that they will come out alongside the regional qualifiers probably even before the 3rd of January. This means that there are only four LAN events left, The Defense, DreamHack Moscow, The Summit 4 and WCA 2015, for teams to impress Valve and earn the direct invite.
Holding the qualifiers for the tournament that takes place in March in early January might seem a bit premature. But considering that the event takes place in China giving teams more time to get their visas as and travels plans sorted out might pay dividends. However, the start of the Regional Qualifiers seems a bit unfortunate as the 7th of December is in fact Russian Orthodox Christmas. Because of that CIS players might have to pick between their work and their annual family meeting.
