2,000,000,000 games played in Dota 2

Just recently, the mark of 2 bilion games played has been passed in Dota 2. Valve’s free to play MOBA, which is a sequel to the WarCraft III custom map Defense of the Ancients, has been available for beta testing since 2010, which is when the first games were played.

Dota 2 has been in so-called “closed beta” since 2010, but after a while basically every person interested received a beta key and even a few more to invite friends. Despite that, when the game was officially released in July 2013, the player base still rose tremendously.

Ever since then, the game continues to grow. Right now the Top 5 largest overall prize pools in eSports are all from Dota 2 tournaments. Moreover, the Smite World Championship 2015 (6th highest in that ranking) had over 7 times smaller prize pool than The International 5 (the richest ever Dota 2 competition). With such humongous prize money up for grabs, it comes as no shock that the player base continues to grow, especially after TI each year.
